December – It’s a Wrap

New Year's Eve: it's here already - again. In a few hours, I'll gather with some friends to celebrate and to greet 2014 with kisses and champagne. As I look back over 2013, doing my year-end review, I see the usual number of things that went well and things that didn't: there were successes, surprises, disappointments, bumps in the road and a few blind curves. I'm now laying out my road map for 2014, knowing that flexibility is key: the year ahead will yield its own surprises and obstacles. Still, I like to lock in a destination, even while knowing I'll probably make some detours [...]

Thanksgiving Traditions – Old and New

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. What could be better than gathering with family and friends to give thanks and eat good food? Every year, the very first dish I make is the cranberry sauce - usually a couple of days before Thanksgiving. That's how I know the holiday is here - I've made the cranberry sauce. And one of my traditions is to tweak the current recipe, or try a new one. This year is no different - found a new recipe. But even with a new recipe, I'm always experimenting. I add less sugar than the recipe calls for, and substitute some fresh orange [...]

October Ghost Stories

There's a reason stage managers set out the ghost light before they leave, right? Every old theater I've been in seems to have had at least one ghost in it - and at least one good scary story. The beautiful Pantages in Hollywood is no exception. Just do a Google search on "haunted Hollywood" or "haunted Pantages" and you'll find several sites that relate similar stories. But I've included on this short video a friend's story that you won't find elsewhere. Enjoy!

September – Back to School: Shop Class

First of all, I don't consider myself mechanically inclined. I've helped to build and tear down some theater sets. I've done some minor home repairs. I know how to check the oil in my car, change the wiper blades, and so on - basic stuff. In August, we purchased a 1999 Acura TL. Nice car; best car we looked at within our modest price range. We knew the car had some "issues" when we purchased it - but I don't think we were quite prepared for the headlong plunge we've taken into this auto shop class. Here's the syllabus: What's the TCS light and why [...]

August NorCal Road Trip

Ah, the summer road trip. Brings back memories, doesn't it? Kids crammed in the back seat, elbowing each other for more space, choruses of "are we there yet?" Our summer road trip took us up to Northern California to see family and friends. Just getting out of town was a big challenge for us. We had been cat-sitting for about a week and needed to drop off dear Charlie before leaving. By the time all our errands, chores and tasks were completed and Charlie was safely delivered, it was prime time rush hour on the 405. No blasting out of town for us; we finally [...]

July Summer Camp

July seemed like a whirlwind of activity. Just in case the rehearsals and performances at the Eclectic weren't enough, I took on some new projects and finished up some others that had been languishing in corners and on shelves. I sewed table linens and a pajama top. That pajama top had been just a pile of fabric pieces for over a year. I finished knitting a wrap that I started months ago. It felt like I was at summer camp, having a blast, going from one project to another. Just without the campfires and s'mores. And how's your summer been going?

Some Weekend R&R in June

Sometimes you just have to get away for the weekend, right? Time to do nothing...just re-charge your batteries. One of our favorite weekend get-away spots is Catalina Island. Honestly, I think once the boat pulls away from the landing, my stress level drops a good 40%; nothing to do now but sit back, relax and watch the water and the sky. And just about an hour later, the boat pulls into this beautiful little harbor - you want to pinch yourself to make sure you're still in California and haven't somehow slipped the space/time continuum and arrived at some exotic island in the Mediterranean or [...]

Some Lessons Learned in the Month of May

In early May, on a rainy Monday morning, my husband was in a car accident. No one was hurt, thank God; shaken, yes, but otherwise fine. However, our car was a total loss. On that day, I needed to get from the Westside to the Valley, then Silverlake, then the Palisades. And now we had no car. My first impulse was to cancel everything for the day - and I did cancel the Valley. Then some temporary fixes presented themselves. A "Tap" card could be purchased - the first step in buying a day pass on the LA Metro system. I gathered information on routes [...]
